Meet the Beautiful Patti ~ Portrait Session

A while back, Katrina had the opportunity to do some portraits for our makeup artist friend, Liz Margin. Here's a link to the blog entry: click here.

Liz's friend Patti liked the portraits so much that she called us up and we had Katrina shoot her portraits as well. Patti is one gorgeous gal, and is every bit as sweet as she is photogenic!

Also, Patti's dog is best friends with Liz's dog, so we had to include some doggy portraits :)

Thanks for having us work with you, Patti!

Enjoy the images!

Guest Signature Books ~ Joni and Denny

A short time ago we delivered a guest signature book for a fabulous client of ours. We've gotten so many requests for these books that we wanted to show more images of them.

This unique book is a combination of portraits of guests during the cocktail hour and character portraits done in a photo-booth style during the reception, all mixed in with messages of happiness and gratitude that the guests wrote that we scanned and included in the white space around the images. We think it turned out nicely!

Some of you may remember the images we posted after their wedding of the character portraits done photo-booth style. Here is a link to that blog entry: click here.

Also, here is a link to Joni and Denny's slideshow from the event: Joni and Denny

Enjoy the images, and be sure to let us know what you think of this book!

Happy Clients ~ Sara and Mike

A short time ago we delivered an album to our clients Sara and Mike, whose wedding was at the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix.

Just the other day, we got this email from them:

"Hi Katrina and Andrew,
...The highlight of the night was of course opening the album and looking through it for the first time - it is truly beautiful and we are ecstatic with how it turned out. The pictures, the layout, the quality of the album - we couldn't be happier. In fact, we debated putting gloves on to look through it, and now we don't know what to do with it because we don't want to leave it out with our other albums where anyone with sticky fingers could pick it up and anytime and get it dirty!! We feel so lucky that we chose you to be our photographers at our wedding - a number of my friends didn't realize the importance of a really great photographer when they got married and have since told me that that is the main thing that they would change if they could go back and do it again. I don't know that there is really anything that we would change - it really was a perfect day for us, and we can't believe that it has been a year already. Thank you both so much for all of the hard work you have put into our photos - we have so many beautiful shots that we will forever have to remind us of that special day."

We are so thankful for the fantastic clients that come our way, and we appreciate that our work can make such an impression and that it might stand the test of time :)

We happen to agree with Sara and Mike that it is perhaps the photographs of your wedding that will refresh the great memories from the day better than anything else possibly can.

Thanks to you, Sara and Mike, for allowing us to document your beautiful wedding! Really, the honor was all ours :)

Here are some images of their album. Enjoy!

The Little Black Book of Wedding Vendors ~ By Style Me Pretty

We were happy to be invited recently to participate in the Style Me Pretty, Little Black Book of Wedding Vendors (aka, the LBB), which is a very small, nationwide collection, of boutique wedding vendors that specialize in eclectic, artful, and detail-oriented wedding services.

May 15th, 2008, is the scheduled launch date for the Sedona listing.

Part of what makes the LBB so refreshing is that it's not just another website crammed full of links to wedding vendor websites from A to Z. It's an invitation only listing, limited to 3 vendors per service per market. Our listing will be for the Sedona, Scottsdale, and Las Vegas markets.

Upon skimming through the website state-by-state, we were humbled to realize what great company we're among by being listed there, many of which are friends of ours and whose work we really admire.

Thanks to Abby and Michelle at Style Me Pretty for the invitation. We gratefully and humbly accept :)

Aimee and Albert ~ Los Abrigados Resort and Spa

Aimee and Albert were married on October 27, 2007 along beautiful Oak Creek at Los Abrigados Resort and Spa.

They were so sweet to work with. We really enjoyed documenting all the sweet looks they gave each other throughout the day. Aimee and Albert both were full of smiles from start to finish!

We went to Tlaquepaque, where for the first time on their wedding day they saw each other. Shooting their family pictures, right after their first glances, enabled us to be able to go off site later on for some pictures on the red rocks at sunset, and gave them time to enjoy a little of the cocktail hour with their guests.

Events by Showstoppers did a beautiful job with the pink floral theme. The cake with sugar flowers was made by Sedona Sweet Arts. And one of our favorite DJ's in Sedona, Bobby, at Sedona Sounds, did a great job keeping the dance floor busy through the night.

View the entire slideshow of the wedding here.

Enjoy the images!

Aimee and her family worked really hard on the details... they had embroidered each napkin that was set on the plates at the reception. The votive candle holders had Swarovski crystals and were used as decor and favors for their guests. The pink and green theme really matched Aimee's warm personality.

I love this shot and I have to thank Gulnara for pointing it out to me during a portfolio review at the last Foundation Workshop. The light from Andrew's second flash spilling over and lighting the flower girls face perfectly is awesome. I love the expression on her face.

Photographers, it's great to get comments and ideas from your fellow photographers. Thank you Gulnara for sharing so many ideas with me regarding these images. If want to see some amazing photography be sure to check out her work here! She's fabulous!

The Wedding Chronicle ~ Featured in the Most Beautiful Weddings of 2007

We've been behind on blogging the publications in which we've been. Back in January we had Emily and Nick's wedding at the Four Seasons in Scottsdale featured in the Most Beautiful Weddings of 2007 issue.

Emily and Nick had so many amazing details to their wedding. We loved that both their father's married them. My dad married Andrew and I, so of course we thought it was a fabulous idea. Emily had a elegant dress from Kleinfeld of Manhattan and the wedding was a great success with the expert help of wedding coordinator Karen Doan. Colorful floral decor by Table Tops Etc.

Here's a link to their slideshow, you can see that was very a very beautiful wedding, indeed.

Here are a few images of what was published:

Kaiden's Big Day Out ~ In-N-Out and Old Navy

A couple of days ago we made a rare trip down to Phoenix from Sedona to do some random shopping and make our honorable pilgrimage to In-N-Out. If you have been to In-N-Out then you understand, you just have to feed your addiction now and then!

Kaiden, our 22 month old, had a big time with this and we thought we'd share some of the images. Our fun was not only cut short when Old Navy asked me to stop photographing while in their store, but also when cranky monkey boy ( aka, Kaiden) needed a break and quick sip from his sippy-cup!

Lifestyle Family Session ~ The Maxwell Family

I love photographing families! This was such a fun session. Great light, an amazing family... we all had a great time. Taylor is a sweetheart and very excited about the soon to be arrival of her baby sister. I love shooting in natural light... kids are so much more comfortable in their own home and really show their true colors.

There were so many awesome images it was hard for me to just pick a few for the blog. I can't wait to go back to photograph the baby when she arrives!

Enjoy the images!

The Foundation Workshop 6 ~ Dallas, Texas

Photojournalism has become a great influence on wedding photography in the past few years, and is being sought out more and more by brides and grooms alike. Many people categorize photojournalism simply as ' candid photos,' which is partly true about the style, but photojournalism is really so much more. Imagine trying to tell an entire story in as few pictures as possible, and those pictures also need to be artful. It is much more difficult than many people would think!

The Foundation Workshop, started six years ago by Huy Nguyen, a former Dallas Morning News photographer and current member of F8 Studio, was formed in order to teach photographers more about the photojournalism experience.

My assignment was to show up at the McKinney, Texas community center two days in a row and find the story. Without knowing ahead of time what may or may not be going on there, I slowly got to know the regulars, and found many willing and unwilling subjects to take pictures of! It was invigorating! :)

I ( Andrew) especially want to thank my team: Huy Nguyen (team leader), Mark Adams (mentor), Sergio (mentor), Becca Spears (assistant), and then also my fellow students, Erwin Darmali, Joe G., Leigh Miller, and Jesseca Hattey, for sharing their artistic vision, constructive criticism, words of edification, and friendship. I won't forget any of you! Also, thanks to Ben Chrisman, who came to my assignment location on the first day and shared some of his vision with me. :)

Here's a link to the final slideshow that my team leaders put together for the work I shot during those two days. It's a Quicktime movie, and should load pretty quickly.

Becca said on her blog: " Andrew Mejia covered the daily happenings at a rec center in McKinney. Andrew has a natural eye for composition. I could see him layering and anticipating moments where all of the elements of the graphic image and peak action come together (see the first picture below). Andrew's biggest hurdle after his first day of shooting was feeling comfortable getting close to his subject. He was hindered by the common fear of not wanting to invade a subject's personal space. We basically said, "you've got to get over thatĀ." The thing is, there couldn't be anyone nicer than Andrew. I'm sure the general public would be absolutely fine with him invading their personal space. Take a look at these two wonderful images. Just love them. When the first picture came up onto the screen at our final presentations, there was a sweeping cheer. A bunch of photographers in a room know how hard it is to get a complex layered image like this."

Featured on the Food Network Channel

On Sunday night at 9pm MST ( mountain standard time), check out the Food Network to see our good friend and amazing cake artist, Andrea Blaut on the Food Network Challenge! We're so proud of her and not at all surprised that she'd be on national TV. Her cakes are absolutely amazing and we think she's one of the best cake artists in the country. The Food Network must obviously agree by having her on the Food Network Challenge.

In the last few weeks we've been working with them to get one or two of our images on the episode as well, so this is the first time our images will be on national television!

Congratulations to Andrea; we can't wait to see you tonight on the tube! Hopefully baby Kaiden will be asleep so we can watch without interruption... :)

Here are a few images we've shot of her fabulous cakes. Her attention to detail is amazing. Most of our clients have a hard time cutting into the cakes during the cake cut because it's so beautiful. The cherry on top is that they taste amazing as well!

If you get a chance on this short notice, be sure to tune in... Enjoy the images!

Lizzy and Levi ~ The Heritage Museum and Tlaquepaque Village, Sedona, Arizona

Lizzy and Levi were married on October 13, 2007. Both Lizzy and Levi came from New Mexico where they are students. In true destination wedding form, their families and friends came from all over the USA, including New York City, Los Angeles, Florida, and Massachusetts.

They had a spectacular red rock view ceremony at the The Heritage Museum in old uptown Sedona. The Heritage Museum is great for weddings because it has an old rustic Sedona feel and has unbeatable red rock views!

After a brief portrait session out in the Coconino National Forest at Schnebly Hill, we hurried to their amazing reception held at Tlaquepaque, where family and friends enjoyed sunset cocktails on the terrace, and then dined and danced the night away.

Hats off to Amy and her team at Bliss Extraordinary Floral for creating such an amazingly stunning evening with their decor!

Wedding coordination was provided by Karen Lynn. Amazing live jazz was performed by Artists In Rhythm. And of course, the Food Network Challenge's latest star Andrea Blaut, created a cake fit for royalty!

Again, we have to stress that we have the best clients in the world! They always make us feel like family, and we always come out of it feeling like we have 100 new friends! Thanks, Lizzy and Levi :) And, a big thanks to your families too!

As we reported in an earlier post, celebrity event designer, and all-around wedding anything superhero, Scott Corridan, came to Scottsdale, Arizona, to speak about creatively meeting the dynamic challenges of the wedding market. Corridan, also of HGTV's Design Star fame, shared his heart and his philosophy with all in attendance.

This event, which took place at the majestically rustic Los Cedros Arabian horse stables, was full of amazing charm nothing short of old Andalucia, Spain.

We want to extend a big thanks to Fran Samuel, the publisher of Phoenix Bride and Groom magazine, for hosting such a fun and interesting event!
